Dr. Alan Ulsifer, President and Chief Executive Officer of FYidoctors — Canada’s largest independent eye care product and service provider — is this year’s National Ernst & Young Entrepreneur Of The Year® winner.
“Dr. Alan Ulsifer’s achievements are no small feat. His innovative vision of merging full scope optometric practices into a single entity — the first of its kind in the country — transformed Canada’s optometry industry,” says Colleen McMorrow, Partner and National Director, Entrepreneur Of The Year. “These kinds of innovative solutions that overcome a struggling economy take strong leadership and an even stronger team.”
That’s something Ernst & Young finds common to many entrepreneurs. The recent report, Defying gravity: high-growth entrepreneurship in a slow-growth economy, which surveys more than 600 US Entrepreneur Of TheYear 2012 finalists, shows that over 40% believe their greatest source of success is assembling the right management team — a finding that rings true in Canada as well, McMorrow says.
“High-performing entrepreneurs understand the power and potential of developing strong people teams,” she adds. “They excel at creating these teams, innovating among them and instilling vision and passion in them.”
More than 25% of respondents also believe that their ability to identify and develop talent is their biggest strength — a quality Alan has proven is key.
“Having the right people in place can mean the difference between overcoming roadblocks and hitting them head on,” says McMorrow. “Alan’s commitment to building leaders, not just managers, at all levels of the business is what makes FYidoctors a true stand-out.”
Dr. Ulsifer, along-side his founding partners, started FYidoctors in April 2008 and today it has over 100 locations across Canada.
Ernst & Young Entrepreneur Of The Year® recognizes the spirit and contribution of entrepreneurs here and around the world. The Canadian program is in its 19th year of honoring the country’s most impressive entrepreneurs from all areas of business. Award winners are chosen based on a number of factors, including their vision, leadership, financial performance and social responsibility.
What’s next?
The 2013 World Entrepreneur Of The Year® awards will be held June 6 to 9 in Monte Carlo, Monaco. Dr. Alan Ulsifer, Canada’s Entrepreneur Of The Year, will compete with more than 50 other country recipients for the title of Ernst & Young World Entrepreneur Of The Year®.

The sun can contribute to several serious eye conditions that may lead to partial vision loss or complete blindness. Optometrists are diagnosing more of these eye care problems as a result of increased sun exposure.
Cancer
Skin cancer is a well-documented effect of excessive sun exposure. This also applies to the skin around the eyes. Cancerous growths in the eyelids can negatively impact a person’s vision. UV exposure can also lead to cancer of the eye itself, which can result in total vision loss.
Cataracts
Cataracts, or the clouding of the lens of the eye, commonly affect older Canadians. However, optometrists are now treating patients as young as 30 with the same vision problems. Eye care specialists point to UV exposure as the reason behind this increase in cataracts among otherwise young, healthy adults.
Macular Degeneration
UV rays contribute to the deterioration of cells. Because the cornea offers a clear window through which UV rays can enter, the retina can suffer from significant sun damage. When this happens, macular degeneration can occur, resulting in greatly diminished eyesight. To avoid these sun-related eye problems, be sure to wear UV-protected sunglasses and make regular eye exam appointments.
FYidoctors can work to help identify the early signs of eye cancer, cataracts, and macular degeneration. Our team of qualified optometrists can also diagnose other common eyesight problems, such as glaucoma and refractive disorders, and provide effective treatment. To schedule an appointment at any one of our locations across Canada, please refer to our FYidoctors website www.fyidoctors.com

Like any other piece of delicate equipment, your glasses need specific cleaning products and tools to avoid damage. Luckily, you can become a pro at caring for your eyewear by following a few easy rules and guidelines.
Always Use a Hard, Protective Case When Your Glasses Aren’t in Use
The quickest way to break your brand new eyewear is by placing glasses in your purse, in your pocket, or on an uneven surface. When you buy a new pair of glasses, talk to the eyewear specialist about choosing the right case for the best protection. Always find a case with a hard outer shell that doesn’t squish or bend your frames, and make it a rule to store your glasses in your case whenever they’re not in use.
Use Handsoap, Dishwashing Detergent, or Special Eyeglasses Cleaner
Avoid using harsh cleaning products, as they often contain chemicals that can permanently damage your lenses or take off the paint on your frames. Instead, use mild soaps or glasses cleaner purchased from your optometrist or local drug store to wash your lenses.
Dry with a Soft, Clean, Cotton or Microfiber Cloth
Paper products and rough fabrics can make tiny scratches across your lenses, which will affect how clearly you can see. For the best smudge-free cleaning, buy a small microfiber cloth made specifically for lenses. If you don’t have one available, you can use soft cotton fabrics. Never wipe your lenses when they’re dry, as it can damage the surface.
If you just got your first prescription for eyewear from your optometrist, follow these rules to keep your glasses looking new and working great. FYidoctors has a huge inventory of unique, fashionable frames from many of your favorite designers. Find out more about our frames and lenses by visiting us on the web. www.fyidoctors.com
